The Butterfly and the Bee
The Butterfly and The Bird is a commission from Martin House Hospice Care for Children and Young People to mark its 30th anniversary. The dome design features house martins, which give the hospice its name, and butterflies, the symbol of the children’s hospice movement.
Martin House worked with Sheffield artist Sarah Jane Palmer, along with a group of its children and families to develop the design of the pod.
At 5m diameter by 4m high, the pod has space for wheelchair access, and Martin House plans to use it with its children and young people at its hospice in Boston Spa as a play space, a den, for storytelling, an art gallery and creative space.
It will also go out to community events to promote the work of Martin House, which cares for children and young people with life-limiting conditions in West, North and East Yorkshire.
“We hope it will raise awareness, prompt curiosity and dispel myths about children’s hospices, and will be something we can use for many years to come,” Alison Wragg, community fundraiser, Martin House.
