Fairy Ring Exhibition

Our new exhibition ‘Fairy Ring’ has opened at Bishop Auckland Gallery, County Durham and runs from 8th July – 9th Sept 2017

Fairy rings (naturally occurring circles of mushrooms) are anchored in folklore as portals to other worlds. This exhibition aims to connect us with our sense of wonder, the possibility that we can inhabit the fantastical make believe worlds that exist within us.

As well as creating a magical environment this installation hopes to highlight the importance of the humble mushroom. Fungi are one of the most important groups of organisms on the planet. They are the ultimate natural recyclers, breaking down plant and animal debris turning it into nutritious life giving soil. All plants rely on fungi to survive, without them the whole food chain would collapse. They also provide us with essential medicine, the most well known being penicillin.
